BIO

Dr. Jessell Owens doesn’t like being told she can’t do something.

When a college professor told her she couldn’t study sports medicine, compete as a full-time student athlete and do research, she made it her mission to prove the professor wrong. Not only did Owens graduate from Pepperdine University summa cum laude, but she was also named an NCAA All-Academic Honoree (all four years), Women’s Swim Team Scholar-Athlete of the Year (twice), Female Scholar-Athlete of the Year, Natural Science Division Outstanding Graduate, and was a class valedictorian finalist.

It’s clear, when Dr. Owens meets a challenge, she rises to it.

As a science lover who enjoys connecting with people, a career in medicine simply made sense to Dr. Owens. She chose orthopaedics for the unique opportunities it provides to treat disease versus manage it. Her practice enables her to build relationships with people who have lived highly active lives and have interesting stories. For Dr. Owens, helping them return to the active lives they miss is gratifying.

She is trained and accomplished in joint replacement, specializing in primary and revision total hip and knee arthroplasty. Accordingly, she is highly credited for her work as an anterior approach total hip arthroplasty (anterior hip replacement) surgeon. Dr. Owens completed a fellowship at Colorado Joint Replacement in Denver prior to joining Great Basin Orthopaedics.

While she is a skilled surgeon, Dr. Owens notes that not all patients are ready for surgery or require it. Understanding her patients’ priorities and goals, including where they want to be in one, five or ten years, is vital to determining the best course of treatment. In the end, her patients decide how to address their hip and knee joint pain after discussing all their options with her.

This Northern Nevada native and high desert lover is delighted to be back in her home state at a practice that shares her patient-centric approach. When she’s not caring for patients, Dr. Owens enjoys hiking, skiing, and swimming — but she claims if she were to race her former self, “It would be an embarrassment.”
