Great Basin Orthopaedics’ Timothy P. Dooley, MD, recently became the first surgeon in Northern Nevada to perform a joint replacement procedure using the TOUCH CMC 1 prosthesis, a treatment option for patients with arthritis at the base of the thumb.
Thumb carpometacarpal, or CMC, arthritis occurs when the cartilage in the joint at the base of the thumb wears down, which can result in pain, stiffness, swelling and loss of grip strength. These symptoms can make everyday activities, such as opening a jar, turning a key or writing, difficult.
The TOUCH CMC 1 Prosthesis is a cementless, dual-mobility ball-and-socket total joint replacement designed for the CMC joint. Its dual-mobility technology is designed to enhance joint stability. While new to the United States, the prosthesis has been used in Europe over the past decade in the treatment of thumb arthritis.
