Bio

If Dr. Jordan Shaw were to explain what brought him to be medicine, he might start with a Venn diagram showing the intersection of ‘passion for science,’ ‘interest in body mechanics,’ and ‘desire to help others’. In orthopedics, he discovered a career where, every day, he gets to meet new people, practice medicine, and help restore a person’s independence, mobility, and freedom. He enjoys learning about patient’s concerns and goals and then developing a treatment plan together to get them “back on their feet.”

Dr. Shaw is an orthopedic surgeon specializing in foot and ankle. He was drawn to foot and ankle because it’s a diverse sub-specialty that’s both challenging and rewarding. His patients experience a wide breadth of problems, and foot problems can have a significant impact on one’s quality of life. Whether it be performing athletically or being able to better enjoy daily activities, the foot and ankle specialty offers an opportunity to significantly enhance a person’s well-being and life experience.

While surgeon is in his title, many of Dr. Shaw’s treatment options are non-surgical. Dr. Shaw believes patients know themselves best and can provide helpful insight into injuries and future goals. His number one priority is to connect with a patient to assess their problem and offer an appropriate treatment solution that is both therapeutic and feasible. He notes that in foot and ankle there are a tremendous number of minimally invasive therapies and treatments that can often be used to promote healing without surgery.

Conversely, for patients with serious and advanced conditions, surgery is sometimes the ideal approach. For example, in his patients with end stage ankle arthritis who experience debilitating pain and loss of function and mobility, a total ankle replacement can be life-restoring. Dr. Shaw is trained in total ankle replacement and has seen great, long-lasting results in patients. With surgery, patients can expect a long conversation regarding the benefits and risks of the procedure, what to expect in the operating room, and during recovery, followed by plenty of time for questions to be answered.

Dr. Shaw spent several years living in Spanish-speaking countries and completed a Spanish language program abroad. He is conversant in Spanish and looks forward to welcoming Spanish-speaking patients to his practice.

When deciding where to put down roots, Dr. Shaw sought a practice with a patient-centered approach to care where patient preferences, needs and values guide clinical decisions. He found that approach at Great Basin Orthopaedics, along with a group of respected, talented surgeons who care deeply about the health of their community.

After recently relocating from the Midwest, Dr. Shaw and his wife are settling into Reno life with their three young children — twin boys and a girl.  Dr. Shaw looks forward to getting to know his neighbors and exploring the great outdoors with his family.
