How to prepare for your orthopaedic surgery

There are many ways to prepare for surgery to make the procedure easier and the recovery more comfortable. Some of these preparations are obvious, others less so. You will receive an extensive preparation list before your surgery, and we’re sharing some of the highlights below to help you put your best foot (or arm or hand or shoulder) forward when facing a surgery. Remember that we’re always here to answer questions about your particular surgery and circumstances.

Patient gets three shoulder repairs in one surgery

Surgery is not always warranted with an orthopaedic injury, so it pays to have a care team that presents all your options.
Mike Ingram found that team and those options for his shoulder injury at Great Basin Orthopaedics.

Like many of us, Mike Ingram was not eager to have surgery when he injured his shoulder five years ago. A friend who’d had a similar injury referred Mike to Great Basin Orthopaedics (GBO) and Dr. Thomas Fyda who gave Mike the news he wanted to hear: He could attempt non-operative treatment for his rotator cuff.

Just because the shoe fits, doesn’t mean you should wear it

There are good shoes and there are bad shoes. When you choose appropriate shoes for your activity, you help prevent injury, support foot and gait health and you’re more comfortable, too.

Shoes matter.
When you wear shoes, you’re not just making a statement about your style, shoes can keep your feet healthy, prevent injury and make physical activity more comfortable.

Cheering for continuity of care

Galena High School student Kiley Cryer had a piece of cartilage forming over the natural gap in her foot. As it was starting to calcify, surgery was necessary for her to maintain her range of motion and avoid a bone fusion.

Dr. Richard Hayes removed the cartilage during out-patient surgery in January 2018 and she started physical therapy (PT) with GBO’s Stephen Capel about two weeks after that.

Our Hand Injury Specialists Support Your Recovery

We use our hands and wrists for so many things that it can be easy to take them for granted. But when something goes wrong, we realize how indispensable they are to our daily lives.

The Great Basin Orthopaedics (GBO) team is skilled in the care of all hand and upper extremity problems (from the shoulder to the fingertips) — from repairing fractures and other sudden onset injuries to rehabilitation for chronic conditions and full joint reconstruction.

Avoiding injury in the office

When we think of workplace injuries, most of us probably picture a construction site rather than an office. But OSHA reports that musculoskeletal disorders (MSDs) account for more than $15 billion in workers’ compensation costs every year. And those are “just” from sitting at a desk and working on a computer, and don’t include trips, falls and other common office accidents.

According to WebMD.com, the most common MSDs are caused by repetitive stress and include:

The surgeon other doctors recommend

By Sarah Brown

Knowing that I needed some pretty invasive and long recovery surgeries to remedy some genetic defects, I began the due diligence process. First, I went to Yelp and asked people I knew for recommendations which resulted in two doctor consults. I left both feeling unconfident with their expertise for what I needed; possibly like they didn't want to do it, but I cannot be sure. That was not a good feeling at all.
