BIO

It’s a lucky thing Joel Peck tore his meniscus his senior year of high school. Because up until that point, the tri-sport athlete was heading toward a career in marketing. Instead, his basketball season ended early, he had surgery and started physical therapy (PT). That’s where the magic happened.

Peck enjoyed his PT experience so much, he decided to change majors. It wasn’t just the return to sport that interested him, he appreciated the atmosphere of the clinic where athletes and others regained their health. With the guidance of his therapist, he pursued Pre-Physical Studies at the University of Wisconsin-La Crosse then completed his Bachelor of Science in Physical Therapy at the University of Health Sciences/The Chicago Medical School in Chicago, Illinois.

After completing a Doctorate of Physical Therapy at Rosalind Franklin University of Medicine and Science in North Chicago, Illinois, Dr. Peck interned at the Caremark Clinic located inside the Deerfield Illinois Multiplex Center where the Chicago Bulls trained. After working with professional basketball players, Dr. Peck interned at St. Mary’s Outpatient Clinic in Milwaukee, Wisconsin where he was able to work with Olympic speed skaters, including Dan Jansen and Bonny Blair.

While athletes and sports injury are an area of expertise, Dr. Peck considers himself an orthopaedic generalist and enjoys treating all types of injury in all types of people. He has a strong manual therapy background and is certified in dry needling. Dr. Peck works to ensure his patients understand their injury and the why and how of their rehabilitation process. In addition to that early meniscus tear, he has endured several other injuries and rehabilitations himself — fractured clavicle, wrist and nose — which lends a natural sense of empathy to his work.

Sports have always been a part of Dr. Peck’s life. In high school, it was basketball, football and tennis. In college, he played lacrosse. He and his wife moved to Reno/Tahoe in 1994, specifically so they could take advantage of the year-round recreation. With their three children — now in college and high school — they wakeboard all summer, snowboard all winter, and hike and bike in between. Dr. Peck is also an avid musician who loves to play guitar and sing. There’s a rumor he even had a punk rock band with some fellow med students back in the 90s in Chicago.

From the minute you walk in, everyone is so pleasant, so nice. They really care. It wasn’t run like a business where it’s quick in and out in half an hour. They take the time you need. Amy sees a lot of military and firefighters with my same injury. She was very encouraging and told me, ‘we can help you out. If it wasn’t for Joel, my wife wouldn’t be back at work.

I love Joel [Peck]. He was super knowledgeable and was able to explain what was going on so that I understood exactly why we were doing what we were doing. Before I wasn’t able to work out, lift weights or do yoga. And I woke up every night in pain. Now I can do all the things I want to do.

Had a total ACL reconstruction and meniscus repair 4 days ago. Dr. Fyda performed the surgery. He is awesome and I love his nurse Sandy! They (and everyone there) have been so informational, personal and caring. I am so grateful for them. Started physical therapy with Dr. Joel Peck at the same clinic. I'm walking better (albeit with crutches), my strength is getting better and he's very encouraging about my progress, knowing I want to get back to everything I was able to do before. I couldn't ask for better providers. Thank you, Great Basin Orthopaedics and Physical Therapy!

Dr. Fitzpatrick and Dr. Peck have been hands down the best i've ever worked with for surgery and post-op in my life. My ACL reconstruction by Dr. Fitzpatrick was clean and almost completely pain free. I truly felt like i was working with the best in the business during my pre-op and surgery. The graft feels very solid and well done with precision. Working with Dr. Peck in therapy has been such a motivating and helpful experience post-op. I am 5 weeks post-op and not only has the Therapy staff been great to me, but having Dr. Peck work with me directly this much, has made me feel so lucky i chose Great Basin Ortho. I cannot say enough great things about working with this group. I look forward to the continuation of my Therapy throughout the rest of my recovery!
