Imaging

Imaging services

Imaging is often required at the start of your orthopaedic diagnostic process. Great Basin Orthopaedics offers on-site x-ray and MRI for your convenience and continuity of care.

X-ray

What is it?
X-rays are a type of radiation called electromagnetic waves that create a picture of the inside of your body.

Is it safe?
Generally, the amount of radiation you're exposed to during an X-ray is the equivalent to a few days of exposure to natural radiation from the environment.

When to use it?
X-rays are used to check for bone fractures.

What to expect?
When you have an X-ray, you may wear a lead apron to protect certain parts of your body. The technician will stand in another room or behind a shield. Depending on the body part being X-rayed, you may lie down during the procedure, sit or stand. While the doctor may require multiple X-rays (views of the injured area), taking the images takes only a few minutes.

MRI

What is it?
MRI – or Magnetic Resonance Imaging – uses a large magnet, radio waves and a computer to create a detailed, cross-sectional image of internal organs and structures. The procedure is non-invasive and painless.

When to use it?
MRI is used to identify things not visible on X-ray, including small fractures. An MRI’s ability to highlight contrasts in soft tissue makes it useful in deciphering problems with joints, cartilage, ligaments, and tendons. MRI can also be used to identify infections and inflammatory conditions or to rule out problems such as tumors.

What to expect?
MRI uses a magnet to collect images, so items made of metal are not allowed near it (remove all jewelry and alert technician of any metal in your body like pacemakers or surgical hardware). During the MRI scan, you lie on a table that slides inside a tunnel-shaped machine. Scans typically take between 20 and 60 minutes, during which time you will need to remain still. While MRI machines make a lot of noise (you’ll be given ear protection), the scan is painless. Some scans require only part of the body to be inserted into the machine, and others require the entire body which may be uncomfortable for those who are prone to claustrophobia.

After my great success with Grant after my knee surgery, requested him once again for arthritis issues on both shoulders. While there are still improvements to be made, I feel I have made progress in a very short time, because of Grant’s knowledge & skills in his field! Most important, he cares about his patients & listens to their needs! In addition, Grant makes sure his staff follows through with his instructions & gives the same great care! Many thanks & appreciation to Grant & his staff at GBO!!

I hurt my foot playing softball last summer. My friend referred me to Great Basin Orthopaedics. The doctors were super nice, and the employees were super nice, too. I hope to be back on the softball field this summer.

Amazing professional! She made a custom splint for our son (who lost the tip of his thumb) so he could get back to playing sports. She squeezed him in without an appointment. Thank you!

Fixed my sons Right Clubfoot with very mininal treatment compared to other doctors recommendations. Minimal serial casting, No surgery, minimal bracing time. And over a year now with No treatment, and His foot looks perfect. Although I felt rushed along, and sometimes dismissed. I cant complain much, as I also felt the doctor did an excellent job, and wasnt there to screw around or put me through the ringer with extra treatments or procedures. Too many doctors out there seem to try and treat Clubfoot, and do more damage than good. Dont go anywhere else for clubfoot treatment.

The x-ray tech Kathy was a pleasure. I was crying from the pain and she even took the time out to hug me.

Great Basin Orthopedics repaired my elbow accident and recently performed a total hip replacement. The elbow outcome was excellent using GBO's Physical Therapy services and I am hopeful the hip will be better than new in a short while. Stephen Capel was my therapist for the elbow and is now for my hip. I have full confidence with him.

Always professional, courteous and compelling for me, the patient, to do exercises that enhance performance. I am challenged to exercise Amy's list of items so I can get better through each appointment. VG!

I love how smoothly everything runs here. My doctor is amazing the nurse is great too. From checking in, to follow ups to my surgery (ACL) everything went so smoothly and even my post op care. I wish all my doctors outside ortho would go so smoothly! Great job guys!

If you live in the Reno area, you just can't do better than Great Basin Orthopaedic. I'm someone with knee problems going way back decades, as well as other orthopedic issues, so I think I know what I'm talking about. Don't settle, get the best, go to Great Basin, or, as they call it GBO. I promise you will be glad you did.

It's been a few years since I went here with a broken arm and I can't thank them enough for the excellent care I got!!! I was able to avoid surgery and avoid my arm getting to stiff since he didn't put me in a full cast. The staff was super friendly throughout the whole building from the receptionist, the nurses, the x-ray techs and the dr. Literally everyone had a smile and that's rarer these days
